분지(焚紙)로 인한 선의 산수 이미지 조형화 연구

- 본인 작품을 중심으로 -

 

 

산수화는 자연에 대한 이상적인 관념의 공간을 표현하고, 그것을 고착화한 하나의 형태로 볼 수 있다. 여기서 이상적인 관념이란 자연을 바라본 작가의 관념 속에서 표현되고 해석된 자연의 모습이라고 생각한다. 이때 산수화에 대한 관념은 자연에 관한 작가 스스로의 가치관을 담는 것이고, 의경(意境)을 이루고자 했던 자연에 대한 주체적인 태도를 반영한 것으로 생각한다. 그래서 자연을 대상으로 하는 작품은 실제 풍경을 그렸다 하더라도 객관적인 사실 묘사가 전부가 아니라 작가 마음속에 내재한 자연경(自然景)이 표현된다고 할 수 있다. 본인의 작업에서도 실제 자연풍경을 보고 사실적인 형상을 구현하는 데 중점을 두지 않고, 보여주고자 하는 부분이 부각되도록 상대적으로 다른 부분을 함축하는 방식을 사용하여 표현하고자 하였다.

특히 이러한 작업 과정에서 본인은 종이를 불에 태워 생겨난 선과, 종잇조각을 겹겹이 붙여 형상을 갖추어 나가는 방식을 사용한다. 본래 태움이란 기본적으로 소멸의 과정이며, 채우기보다 비워내는 과정이라고 생각한다. 또한, 종이 위에 칠하는 것이 아닌 탄 종잇조각이 화면 안에 겹겹이 중첩되어 형상을 만들고 공간을 만들어 나간다. 결국 태워서 이루어진 선은 소멸하여 사라지는 것이 아닌 역설적으로 새로운 이미지를 생성해 나가면 자연현상의 일종인 순환 원리를 담아보려 하였다.

자연이라는 곳은 생성과 소멸이 끊임없이 일어나는 공간이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 자연의 변화 역동성을 태운 한지를 꼴라주 하는 방법과 접목하여 산수를 표현하게 되었다. 그리고 실경(實景)의 답습을 벗어나 본인만의 태움의 방식을 바탕으로 산의 본질을 만드는 큰 맥과 뼈대인 골산(骨山)을 중심으로 표현해 나간다. 여기서 골산은 가장 근원적인 본질에 대한 질문이며, 산수화에서 말하는 주요법칙 중 골법용필(骨法用筆)의 의미를 생각하며 산의 형상 중에서 일부를 고르고 추려내어 태운 선으로 본인만의 산수 표현을 만들기 위한 방법으로 모색해 나가고 있다.

따라서 본 논문의 연구에서는 ‘태우다’라는 소멸에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 ‘태어나다’라는 생성으로 변하는 관점으로 이해하고, 본인의 작업에서 나타나는 한지의 특성과 태운 선의 중첩으로 이미지가 어떻게 재현되는지 중점으로 살펴보고자 한다. 이로써, 태워서 표현되는 이미지의 가능성과 표현 방식을 정립하여 여러 가지 장르와의 융합과 가능성을 열어가는 것에 실마리를 찾고자 하여 본인의 작업과정을 분석하고 탐구하는 데 목적을 두고 있다.

  

A Study on The Landscape Image of The Line According to Burn the Paper

​Landscape painting can be interpreted as a style that expresses an ideal space of nature and fixes it as one image. The researcher believes an ideal space of nature in this context is born from an artist’s particular interpretation. And this particular interpretation supposes to come from an artist’s value and reflect an artist’s independent attitude towards nature from his will to include his message. Therefore, although a landscape painting depicts particular scenery, it is not only about realistic depiction but also about scenery existing in an artist’s mind. The researcher also focuses on highlighting his points and cutting other parts out rather than depicting everything he sees in scenery in his practice.

 

   During the process of his practice, the researcher especially uses the technique that creates a form with layers of lines and pieces of burned paper. The researcher believes that a state of burning essentially represents a process of extinction by putting importance on emptying out what is inside rather than filling in. The researcher’s work is also not about filling in paper but creating a form and a space with layered paper. Thus, the researcher’s practice eventually embodies the principle of a part of natural phenomenon, circulation, from the fact that lines of burned paper paradoxically creates a new image rather than being dissipated.

 

   Nature can be said as a space that creation and destruction are endlessly occurred. These characteristics of nature embodying endless changes and dynamics are grafted with the technique using the collage of traditional Korean paper, Hanji, in order to express landscape in the researcher’s practice. Then, after the researcher explores the actual scene with eyes, a general outline and detailed rocky mountain are depicted with the researcher’s burning technique. The detailed rocky mountain here refers to a question about the most original essence. The researcher considers the meaning of one of the primal laws of Korean landscape painting, ‘骨法用筆(structural method in use of the brush)’, in order find own technique to express landscape with lines of burned paper while choosing what to visualize from the original landscape.  

 

   Therefore, this thesis attempts to understand a viewpoint that changes to how something is born based on the understanding of ‘burning’ called extinction, and focuses on how an image is represented from the characteristics of Korean traditional paper, Hanji, and the layer of burned paper. The purpose is analyzing and examining the researcher’s practice. The researcher wants to find a clue to fuse his practice with other genres and open a possibility by defining a possibility of an image out of burned paper and the way of expressing.
